UK Remote Gaming Duty receipts up 108% in July

October 7, 2026

UK Remote Gaming Duty receipts reached £589.7m in July, up 108% from £283m in the same month last year, according to provisional HMRC data. The July figures represent tax collected on operator revenues from April to June, the first quarter subject to the new 40% rate that replaced the previous 21% levy.

The sharp increase reflects the UK government’s decision to nearly double the Remote Gaming Duty rate from April 2024, a move that has reshaped the financial landscape for online casino and gaming operators in one of Europe’s most lucrative regulated markets.

Betting and Gaming Duties Show Strong Growth

From April to July, total betting and gaming duties raised £1.93bn, marking a 19% increase year-on-year. Remote Gaming Duty accounted for approximately half of this total, underscoring the growing importance of online gaming to the UK Treasury’s tax receipts.

The timing of tax collection means July’s figures capture the first full quarter under the new regime, providing the clearest picture yet of the revenue impact from the rate increase. The near-doubling of receipts suggests operators maintained revenue levels despite the higher tax burden during the initial implementation period.

Operators Holding Back Price Increases

Despite the significantly higher tax rate, players have not yet seen corresponding price increases, according to industry analysis. Paul Leyland of Regulus Partners told NEXT.io that operators are attempting to absorb the additional costs in the short term.

“Quite a few operators are trying to hold their nerve on bonuses,” Leyland said, suggesting that companies are maintaining promotional spending levels rather than immediately passing costs to consumers through reduced bonuses or altered pricing structures.

This strategy indicates operators may be prioritizing market share retention and customer acquisition in the near term, even as margins compress under the new tax regime.

Long-Term Licensing Considerations

The tax increase is already influencing long-term planning for operators evaluating the UK market. Industry participants are being asked to project their expected Gross Gaming Yield for 2027 as part of licensing strategy discussions, according to sources.

The 40% Remote Gaming Duty rate represents one of the highest online gaming tax rates in Europe, potentially affecting the UK’s competitive position as operators weigh investment decisions across multiple jurisdictions. How long operators can sustain current bonus levels and pricing without adjustment remains a key question for the market’s evolution under the new fiscal framework.

The coming months will reveal whether the initial revenue surge is sustainable or whether operator behaviour changes and potential player migration to unlicensed sites will moderate future tax receipts.
