Free Bet Explained: How It Pays and What the Terms Require

A free bet is a stake credit a sportsbook adds to a customer’s account. It can be spent on a wager but cannot be withdrawn as cash. In most cases the credit pays only the winnings, not the stake, and it expires if unused. This article explains the calculation and the terms from the operator side, where the promotion is configured.

What Is a Free Bet and How Does It Differ From Cash?

A free bet is a sportsbook-issued stake credit. The customer spends it in the bet slip like any other stake, but the credit itself never becomes withdrawable money. Only what it wins can, and even that may be subject to conditions.

Three attributes define it in practice:

  • It lives apart from cash. Operators typically hold it in a separate bonus or promotional balance, or as a token attached to the account. It is not part of the withdrawable cash balance.
  • It is scoped. A free bet is often tied to a sport, a league, a market type, or a minimum odds level. The slip will reject a selection outside that scope.
  • It expires. Each credit carries an expiry date set when the promotion was configured. After that date it is removed from the account.

The contrast with a deposit bonus matters. A deposit bonus adds credit in proportion to funds the customer put in, and it usually comes with a rollover on the credit. A free bet is a fixed stake for one wager, with no link to the deposit amount beyond whatever qualifying rule triggered it. Cash is different again: a cash stake is returned with winnings on a win, can be withdrawn at any time subject to verification, and is not scoped to markets.

If you are aligning your own definitions across product, compliance and support, our gambling glossary of operator terms covers the vocabulary that sits around bonus balances and stake credits.

How Much Does a Free Bet Actually Pay Out?

Under the most common settlement rule, the stake is not returned. A winning free bet pays the profit only. The credit is consumed when the bet is placed, so there is no stake left to hand back.

Take a $10 free bet at +200 (3.00 decimal). American odds of +200 pay $200 profit on a $100 stake, so $10 produces $20 in profit. The customer receives $20, not $30. On a $10 cash bet at the same price, the $20 profit is paid and the $10 stake is returned, for $30 in total.

$10 stake at +200 Profit Stake returned Total credited
Free bet (stake not returned) $20 No $20
Cash bet $20 Yes $30

Odds on the selected market set the size of the payout. Shorter prices pay less on the same credit. A $10 free bet at -200 returns $5 in profit, since the profit is the stake multiplied by 100 over 200. The same price on a cash bet would return $15.

A losing free bet costs the customer nothing from the cash balance, while a losing cash bet loses the stake. That asymmetry is why operators set minimum odds on free bets: without a floor, a customer could back a near-certain outcome and lock in a small, nearly risk-free return.

On the configuration side, “stake not returned” is a settlement flag on the promotion type. The terms should state it plainly, because a customer who expects $30 and sees $20 will contact support. How voided or cancelled bets are handled, whether the credit is reinstated or not, also varies by operator and should be written into the terms.

How Can I Get a Free Bet and What Do the Terms Require?

Free bets are issued through a handful of mechanisms, and each one has its own qualifying rule.

  • Sign-up offers: credit released after registration, often after a first deposit or first wager.
  • Deposit matches: credit tied to a deposit, sometimes capped at a set amount.
  • Referral rewards: credit granted to an existing customer, and sometimes the new one, when a referred account qualifies.
  • Promotional tokens: credits sent by campaign, such as a weekend event or a retention offer, usually triggered by a segment or a prior bet.

Qualifying usually requires a minimum first deposit, or a first wager at a set minimum odds level, placed within a stated window. Operators who run these campaigns at volume normally drive them from a CRM rather than by hand; our CRM guide for sportsbook promotions covers how segments and triggers feed that process.

Before accepting any offer, check these terms:

  1. Expiry window. How many days the credit lasts once issued.
  2. Eligible markets. Which sports, leagues and bet types accept it, and whether multiples are allowed.
  3. Minimum odds. The lowest price per selection, or combined, that the slip will accept.
  4. Credit form. Whether it arrives as bonus balance, which can sometimes be split across bets, or as a single token that must be used whole.

The last point changes behavior at the slip. A token is one fixed unit. A bonus balance may allow partial use. If you are specifying this on the build side, the sportsbook platform features checklist is a useful reference for what the bonus engine should support.

Is a Free Bet Really Free?

Sometimes. A free bet costs the customer nothing when it is credited with no deposit and no conditions on the winnings. Often, though, something sits behind it, and the cost shows up in one of three places.

  • A required deposit. The credit is released only after the customer funds the account or places a qualifying cash bet. The free bet is then a reward for spending, not a gift.
  • Playthrough on winnings. Some operators apply a rollover to the profit, meaning it must be wagered a set number of times before it can be withdrawn. Our casino term guide on bonus rules explains how rollover is expressed and calculated.
  • Restricted withdrawal. The credit itself can never be cashed out, and in some configurations winnings stay locked in the bonus balance until conditions clear.

To tell a no-deposit credit from a funded promotion, read the qualifying line first. If the credit appears on registration or verification alone, it is no-deposit. If the wording includes “after your first deposit”, “when you wager” or “minimum stake”, the promotion requires funding. Then look for any wagering requirement attached to winnings, which is often placed in a separate paragraph from the headline offer.

Only the sportsbook’s own terms page is authoritative. Marketing banners and affiliate summaries shorten the conditions and can be out of date. Regulators set expectations for how operators present bonus terms; the UK Gambling Commission publishes its rules for licensed operators in Great Britain, and requirements elsewhere depend on the jurisdiction. A free bet is still a wager. If betting stops being fun or starts to feel hard to control, the National Council on Problem Gambling lists support resources.

How Do You Use a Free Bet on a Sportsbook?

The steps are nearly the same across sportsbooks, though labels differ.

  1. Open the bet slip. Add a selection by tapping its odds.
  2. Choose the free bet option. Look for a free bet toggle, a “use bonus” control, or a token listed under the stake field.
  3. Pick an eligible market. It must meet the minimum odds and fall within the allowed sports and bet types. If it does not, the slip will usually flag the selection or hide the option.
  4. Confirm the stake. Check that the free bet amount, not cash, is applied to the slip.
  5. Check the settlement shown. The slip typically displays potential return. Confirm whether that figure is profit only, which is what you should expect when the stake is not returned.
  6. Place the bet.

A free bet is spent in full on one wager. If you hold a $10 token and place it on a $4 selection, the remaining $6 is generally not kept, unless the terms say the credit can be split. Treat it as one-use unless the offer says otherwise.

Unused free bets expire on the stated date. The expiry usually runs from the moment of issue, not from the first login after it. Free bets also cannot always be combined with other promotions, such as odds boosts or cash-out features, and the terms will list any exclusions. Read those before building a slip around the credit, because a rejected selection near expiry leaves little time to reselect.

Free Bet FAQs Readers Ask Most

What is a free bet?

A free bet is a stake credit a sportsbook gives a customer to place one wager without using their own money. The credit is spent in full on the bet, and it is usually not withdrawable as cash. Only the winnings from a successful free bet are paid out to the customer.

How can I get free bet?

Free bets are usually issued through a sign-up offer, a first deposit match, a referral reward, or a promotional token sent to an existing account. Most offers require a minimum first deposit or a qualifying wager at set minimum odds before the credit is released. The exact route is listed on each sportsbook’s promotions page, and the terms there define what qualifies.

Is bet plus free?

A promotion labeled as a bet plus offer is free only if its terms say the credit carries no required deposit, playthrough, or withdrawal limit. Many offers attach conditions such as a rollover on bonus winnings or a minimum deposit before the credit is released. Read the full terms, including the expiry date and eligible markets, before treating any such offer as having no cost.

How to use free bet on betonline?

Open the bet slip on the BetOnline account, select the free bet option or token, and choose a market that meets the offer’s minimum odds. Confirm that the free bet amount is applied to the stake before placing the wager. Check the potential return shown, since the stake is typically not included in the payout.
