Eritrea’s new licence: €10,000, one year, 10 to 15 days. Read the restricted list twice.

Eritrea has entered the iGaming licensing market with a new B2C and B2B licence offering rapid approval times and zero revenue tax, though operators should pay close attention to a substantial list of restricted territories. Eritrea Gaming announced the Eritrea iGaming License on 14 September under an authorization dated 14 July 2026.

The licence carries an initial issuance fee of €10,000 and an annual renewal cost of €10,000. Each licence covers a single domain for 12 months, with additional domains available at €300 each. Processing time is advertised at 10 to 15 days from submission of a complete application.

Low Barriers to Entry

The Eritrean jurisdiction has positioned itself as accessible to operators of varying sizes by eliminating several common regulatory requirements. No local company incorporation is required, and operators are not obliged to appoint a local director or meet minimum capital thresholds. The licence also features a 0% gross gaming revenue tax, a potentially significant cost advantage compared to established European jurisdictions where GGR taxes typically range from 15% to 25% or higher.

The combination of modest fees, fast processing, and minimal operational requirements may appeal to startups and smaller operators seeking a regulated framework without the capital intensity of tier-one licences.

Restricted Markets Demand Attention

The licence comes with a notable caveat: operators are prohibited from accepting customers from nine jurisdictions. The restricted list includes the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Spain, Austria, Germany, Australia, and Eritrea itself.

This restriction set excludes several of the world’s largest and most lucrative regulated iGaming markets. Operators targeting English-speaking audiences or Western European players will find the licence of limited utility for those core markets. The prohibition on serving Eritrean residents follows a pattern seen in other emerging licensing jurisdictions that separate domestic gambling policy from their international licensing frameworks.

Positioning in a Crowded Field

Eritrea joins a growing roster of jurisdictions competing for iGaming licensing revenue, including Curacao, Anjouan, and various Caribbean and African nations. The success of such licences often depends on their acceptance by payment processors, game suppliers, and platform providers, as well as their reputation among players and affiliates.

Operators considering the Eritrean licence will need to assess whether the cost savings and speed justify potential limitations in market access, supplier relationships, and brand positioning. The restricted territory list means the licence is best suited for operators focusing on markets in Asia, Latin America, and parts of Africa and Eastern Europe where local licensing is not mandatory.

Eritrea Gaming has invited operators to submit their target market lists via WhatsApp to determine whether local licences are required in those jurisdictions.
