Pay-by-Bank in the iGaming Cashier: What to Ask Your Payment Provider

Account-to-account payments are becoming a regular part of how operators evaluate their cashier, though not yet a replacement for cards and e-wallets. If you are choosing or reviewing iGaming payment providers, expect pay-by-bank to be on the agenda. The useful question is how well a provider’s version actually works in your markets.

What is happening

Pay-by-bank uses open banking connections so players move money straight from their bank account, with no card network involved. Several pressures make it a recurring topic. Card acceptance for gambling is restricted or unreliable in some markets. Regulators keep pushing on player verification. Players expect withdrawals to arrive faster.

Why it matters to operators

Bank-based rails change your risk and compliance picture as well as your conversion rate. The player authorises a payment inside their own bank, so the familiar card chargeback process does not apply in the same way. Disputes and fraud still exist, so ask how they are handled. The bank connection can also return verified account-holder data, which can feed KYC and source-of-funds checks. That data supports affordability and responsible-gambling processes, but it does not complete them for you.

What to ask your payment provider

  • Speed in both directions: Are deposits confirmed instantly? Are withdrawals paid on instant rails, or batched?
  • Dispute exposure: What recourse do players have? How are refunds and fraud claims handled? Who carries the loss?
  • Data returned: Which account-holder details come back with each payment? Can they be matched against the player’s registered identity automatically?
  • Market coverage: Which banks and countries are live today, and which are only on the roadmap? How does coverage map to your licences?
  • Responsible gambling fit: Can transaction data feed your affordability checks, deposit limits and self-exclusion controls? Does it arrive in a form your compliance team can audit?
  • Fallbacks: What does the player see if their bank is not supported or the connection fails?

What to do next

Treat pay-by-bank as an addition to your cashier, not a switch away from cards and e-wallets. Test it market by market against your current method mix. Ask for coverage and payout details in writing. Involve compliance early, because the verification data is often the strongest reason to add it.
