Allwyn UK CEO steps down as industry veteran Phil Walker takes over as interim

Allwyn UK has announced a leadership change, with CEO Andria Vidler stepping down from her role and former William Hill executive Phil Walker taking over on an interim basis. Vidler will leave her position on 7 September, having served as Allwyn’s UK CEO since October 2023.

The announcement, made on Wednesday, comes after Vidler successfully oversaw Allwyn’s transition to becoming the operator of the UK National Lottery. Allwyn UK Chair Justin King and Vidler have mutually agreed that now is “the right moment for her to step down” following the completion of major transition milestones.

Vidler will remain with Allwyn UK in an advisory capacity until the end of October to ensure a smooth handover to her successor.

Transition Milestones Complete

King thanked Vidler for her contributions during her tenure, specifically highlighting her role in completing the “much-needed and long-overdue transformation” of the National Lottery. He stated that with the major transition milestones delivered, it is the right time to look to the future and build on the solid foundations laid to create a platform for future growth.

Vidler herself described the National Lottery transformation as “a marathon, not a sprint” and expressed confidence that the lottery is now in a stronger position to keep delivering for the nation. “With the major transition now complete and the National Lottery in a stronger position to keep delivering for the nation, this feels like the right moment for me to pass on the baton,” she said.

Sources close to the company confirmed that Allwyn’s UK priorities remain unchanged, with the business continuing to focus on modernising the National Lottery, driving player safety and supporting good causes.

Experienced Executive Takes Interim Role

Phil Walker brings significant industry experience to the interim CEO position, having previously spent six years in senior positions at William Hill. During his time at the betting operator, Walker served in various senior roles including online managing director and chief commercial officer. Most recently, he held a non-executive director position at City Gaming Limited.

Company sources indicated that Walker’s extensive experience makes him well positioned to oversee the business while Allwyn UK conducts a search for a permanent replacement for Vidler.

Building on Progress

Walker expressed enthusiasm about taking on the role, emphasising his personal connection to the National Lottery and its community impact. “I am excited and proud to be taking up the baton from Andria and joining such a vital national institution at this important stage of its growth journey,” he said.

The incoming interim CEO highlighted that his long-standing status as a National Lottery player gives him first-hand knowledge of the difference it makes to communities across the UK, which he described as a significant factor in his attraction to the role. Walker stated it would be “a real honour” to help build on the progress already made under Vidler’s leadership.
